Vietnam digital workforce

Future-proofing Vietnam’s economy through a next-gen digital workforce

Ben Ryder, August 12, 2025

Vietnam is entering a pivotal decade in its journey to become a digital-first economy. As the country positions itself as a rising tech hub in Southeast Asia, the need to cultivate a digitally competent workforce has never been more urgent. From smart cities and Industry 4.0 adoption to the explosion of e-commerce and fintech, every sector demands future-ready talent equipped with both technical expertise and soft skills. This article explores how Vietnam is aligning education, training, and corporate engagement to future-proof its human capital and what challenges remain along the way.

A strategic national priority

The Vietnamese government has recognized digital transformation as a cornerstone of economic development. The National Digital Transformation Program (2020–2025) outlines ambitious goals: by 2025, Vietnam aims for the digital economy to contribute 20% of GDP, with at least 80,000 digital technology businesses nationwide.

To support this, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has introduced reforms integrating IT and computational thinking into school curricula, starting from primary levels. Universities are also under pressure to redesign programs with a stronger focus on AI, data science, blockchain, and cloud computing, which are essential skills for tomorrow’s economy. Yet, the pace of curriculum reform often lags behind the speed of technological change.

Private sector engagement: From academia to action

Vietnam’s tech-forward companies are stepping in to bridge the education-employment gap. Leading software development firms like PowerGate Software have launched internship programs, training academies, and mentorship initiatives to upskill young graduates. These programs offer hands-on experience in agile delivery, DevOps, cloud platforms, and customer-centric product development. These skills are rarely emphasized in traditional university settings.

Bootcamps and edtech startups are also filling the void. Entities like MindX, CoderSchool, and FUNiX offer short, intensive programs on web development, mobile app creation, and AI, designed to rapidly upskill students and professionals alike. These initiatives reflect a growing ecosystem where education is becoming more modular, accessible, and aligned with industry needs.

Technical skills alone are not enough

Despite the increasing availability of training, one persistent gap remains: soft skills. Many Vietnamese graduates struggle with English proficiency, critical thinking, problem-solving, and cross-cultural communication, which are key competencies in a globalized software development market.

According to a 2024 report by the Vietnam Software Association (VINASA), over 60% of employers identified communication and collaboration as top challenges when hiring junior tech talent. This highlights the need for a holistic workforce strategy that blends technical acumen with emotional intelligence and adaptability.

PowerGate Software, for example, embeds soft skills training and English language development into its internship pipeline and onboarding programs, ensuring that team members can thrive in cross-border projects with US, UK, and APAC clients.

Comparative insights: Vietnam vs. the region

In terms of raw talent pool, Vietnam is gaining ground on the Philippines and Thailand, thanks to its strong math background and rapidly growing number of STEM graduates. However, English language skills continue to favor the Philippines, which remains the top destination for English-speaking customer service and BPO roles.

India, meanwhile, still leads in scale and specialization. But Vietnam’s value proposition lies in its agility, cost-efficiency, and increasingly product-oriented software companies. The challenge now is to move beyond being a low-cost outsourcing destination and cultivate a digital workforce capable of ideating, building, and scaling innovative software products.

The brain drain dilemma

As global demand for tech talent surges, Vietnam faces a familiar challenge: brain drain. Skilled engineers and data scientists are increasingly lured by higher-paying opportunities abroad, particularly in Singapore, Europe, and North America. While some talent returns with new experience, many do not.

To counter this, more companies are investing in employee engagement and career development strategies. For instance, PowerGate Software offers clear growth pathways, overseas project opportunities, and hybrid working models that allow engineers to thrive from within Vietnam while contributing to global innovations.

Moreover, the rise of digital nomadism and remote-first companies offers new possibilities for retaining top talent while still offering international exposure.

The path forward: Partnerships and lifelong learning

Future-proofing Vietnam’s workforce will require more than short-term fixes but systemic collaboration across public institutions, private enterprises, and international partners. Key recommendations include:

  •  Curriculum co-design: Encourage universities and companies to co-develop course content, ensuring alignment with real-world needs.
  • Public-private funding models: Offer tax incentives or co-funding schemes for companies that invest in workforce development.
  •  Continuous upskilling: Promote lifelong learning through micro-credentials, online learning platforms, and professional certifications.
  • Global collaboration: Partner with global institutions to benchmark skill development, exchange research, and offer hybrid degree programs.
